Councils, like many other public bodies, are expected to have an up to date Corporate Plan that normally sets out:

  • the local and national context in which they are working
  • the strategic direction they are following
  • corporate values
  • priorities and areas for improvement and
  • what they plan to achieve with the resources available and how it will be measured.

The Council's Corporate Plan, covering the period 2007-11, was agreed by the City of Edinburgh Council in August 2007.

The plan shows how the Council is tackling the strategic issues that matter to the public, improving performance and working with partners to improve services. The plan outlines priorities for the next four years, identifies what the Council will be doing to contribute to Edinburgh’s City Vision, and provides strategic direction for the Council and all those working within the organisation.

Social, demographic, economic, environmental and financial factors have an influence on the city and therefore the plan over the next four years and these are outlined briefly in the introduction. The Council is committed to responding to the changing needs of the city and many of the actions are specifically aimed at responding to anticipated changes in demand and in the public’s expectations in areas such as affordable homes, children’s services, care for the elderly and the quality of the environment.

The plan is based around seven strategic outcomes which capture what the Council aims to do for the city and its citizens:

  • Edinburgh is a safe, green, clean and attractive city
  • Edinburgh has a competitive and successful economy with sustainable communities
  • The city has modern, effective transport arrangements
  • The city has a range of affordable housing options
  • Children and people of all ages are supported to achieve and fulfil their potential
  • People who need extra help get the support they need and
  • High quality leisure, sporting and cultural facilities and events are provided for Edinburgh's citizens and visitors.

To help realise these outcomes, we must continue to improve the way we work. The plan is therefore supported by a further two internally focused strategic outcomes:

  • the Council is an efficient and effective organisation which supports continuous improvement and
  • the Council displays sustainable and sound financial management in setting, monitoring and implementing its budgets.

The delivery programme, including major priorities and actions, for each of the strategic outcomes is set out in the full Corporate Plan available by clicking the link below.

We will report on progress regularly to elected members and include a report on progress within the Council’s annual report. We will also review the Plan annually and issue an annual supplement to reflect changes in performance, policy, available resources and the Council administration’s priorities.

Printed copies are available on request from the contact details above. A summary leaflet version of the plan is also available.
